Match-Up Game Results & Evaluation

Whilst finding examples of the following peoples hand writing, I knew putting whole letters or passages would be far too obvious just from content. I decided to only take sections of each found piece of writing that was neutralenough to be any one of the four. I decided to host my match-up on Tuesday because that is when students in all pathways are in and I would have more possible participants.

Prior, I was concerned that I may need to have four different coloured lengths of string so there was no confusion but I think the red ribbon was the right width and clear. Had I made any changes, I would have used nails nosed of drawing pins to link the ribbons as one of them fell out and I wasn't strong enough to push them into the wall.

Once I started to invite people to have a go at stringing up the writing to the famous face, I found that some people didn't even need to read the quotes to make a judgment.

The following are quotes I made a note of amongst small groups of participants whilst deciding their final answers:

"I would call (1)'s writing chicken scratch"

"Boris' quote is condescending"

"In the past they would have illegible writing"

interestingly, I observed a strong majority if the participants would quickly separate the four examples into gender early on in their decision making process, the boys, messier examples, and the girls were the neater ones (which in this case is not wrong). Most peoples explanation for making this judgment was that men don't care as much, and that women take more pride in the appearance of their writing.

"Paris would write cursive"

"Paris would care what her hand writing looked like"

Peoples opinions on these people effected their judgement which I was hoping for, I wanted to know what people thought of how that person and what they are like led the to the answer given.

"Boris' writing would have to be clear and legible"

"Meghan is American"

"Paris vibes"

"Boris is inbred"

"Roal Dahl is a genius so his writing is defo messy"

"(1) is Paris because I don't think she is well educated and she is very showy however I find her the least offensive of the four.(2) Meghan is manipulative I think she's awful. (4) is very up-yours"

"(1) screams Eaton"

"Paris can't write"

"Boris has ugly vibes"

"Meghan is cursive"

"cursive is very royal"

"Ive only seen Megan's writing"

A lot of the judgments were quite harsh, but I think opinionated is good, I think a lot of people presumed Paris wouldn't be able to write, im not sure if this was just in the way they perceive her in the media, but I couldn't help but think it slightly crossed over into a more Misoginistic opinion?

I was surprised that only one person brought location into play, it seemed to be a factor that didn't affect peoples choices very much.

Overall I found most often people started by separating gender, believed messy means careless or uneducated and more often than not assigned the writing to how it best suited their perception of the person.

if I were to repeat this, I would probably use nails over pins and maybe add some more options, maybe actors, musicians, dancers or artists? I liked hearing how occupation came into play with what decisions were made. Alternatively I could have turned my game digital, which would have made it easy to send out to a wider audience more quickly, however I think being a physical activity made people think more and I wouldn't have got as much direct feedback.
