Final Reflection

I have included my evaluative statement, so I will keep this on the more brief side. But I am so pleased with where this project has ended out

Obsticals like, timing, vinyl stocking and painting my letters backwards did occur but I managed to solve each of these as they came up.

The result of vinyl being flush against the wall give my letters more dimension as they are only cut out of 9mm MDF. Being Times New roman in black has really held that standard of formality and brings the necessary intention.

I was worried that my moment of flare where I decided to paint my letters gold would be a bit naff in reality, but actually I think it really works for my concept. The little letters look like a collection of treasure, which is just how I think of them so its nice to display them as such.

Obviously, gold being a colour renound for value, I hope that my brother will come and see this piece and see this ability to write in a way I have really come to adore. He might not see it immediately, but I like to think that one day, when he isn't feeling so good about his writing or school work, he might think back to this display and see it as the compliment it is intended to be.

If not Henry, his dyslexia is defiantly present in his letterforms and I do hope others might pose the questions to themselves and envision themselves in the place of Henry (in the form of his gold letters) and see the value of their own ability to write. I really think these letters are quite impactful especially how they glow in the light, they are definitely preferable to the typography written in a more standard font. The letters being 3D boasts the shapes and curves, it really furthers the penmanship so that my audience and really see my brothers process. I think being able to see someone in the form of their handwriting really adds context to what is otherwise just questions and answers. My brothers presence is visible in only his handwriting and I think that allows people to see some backstory to my piece. I am pleased I have been able to present this because I think it is the idea of self expression combined with the conversation displayed itself that bring the emotive reaction I've been after.

If I were to continue this project I would probably just make more letters and allow people to play with them, its maybe too faffy of a concept for a show but they hold a good tacktile quality and maybe having some with velcro backing to arrange on a wall might also be possible as they are not that heavy. However, I am satisfied that this piece, as it is, does speak for my project as a whole from ideas of identity in penmanship, right through to my ideas of handwriting being a form of self expression and dyslexia not necessarily being the disadvantage it is seen as.
